STEWARDSHIP :
By: Rich Kafka, We at Holy Ghost Parish have worked hard to expand our understanding of stewardship to include not only our money, but the Christian use of our time, our talents, our political influence and our life-style decisions. We have sought also to make stewardship a year-round discussion--not merely a three week "campaign". But amid these efforts to widen the consideration, there still must be a time to talk specifically about our money and our giving of it. The first question often raised is, "How much?" How much should I give? What's my fair share of the expense budget? The scriptures offer a specific directive. A tithe. Give ten percent of your income to God. But this "answer" raises other questions: Ten percent of what? Does the tithe really apply to my particular situation? Is ten percent enough for many affluent Christians? I wish we could talk honestly and openly with each other about these questions. I believe that we must keep the principle of tithing always before us; in our conversations with family. in our small group discussions in the church. Maybe the tithe is not the one-size-fits-all answer. But I hope that discussion will move you to consider percentage-giving. What percent of my wealth am I offering to God through the Church? What is my goal in terms of percentage giving? These "how much" questions are important, but if they are the only ones discussed, then our financial emphasis is focused too much on fund-raising and bill-paying. We need also to address the "why" questions. The "why" questions have to do with our heart; our motives. What is my reason for giving? What moves me to be generous or to withhold? Do I give out of obligation? Do I give out of freedom? This is the big question waiting around the edges of our pledge card. A question we need to discuss with each other and with God. I trust that we are in for another good talk about money. Because we are not just asking how much/ but also asking why? It will be a time for us to continue to grow in faith and generosity. For your convenience registered parishioner are sent weekly offering envelopes throughout the year. Contributions can be given in cash, by check, or through direct deposit from a designated bank account. Your generosity is greatly welcomed and appreciated. |
